Once I had all the materials selected, it was time to start designing the test parts that I was going to use to find the right laser cutting and engraving settings for each machine and material. Obviously, I decided this after making myself sure that there were enough leftovers of these 3 materials in the lab as to make all the tests first, but also for the press-fit construction kit that I had to make later for this week's assignment. Trying to make the testing process challenging, I decided that I was going to use three types of materials: 3 mm balsa wood, 3 mm PMMA, and 4 mm (one layer) cardboard. Using leftovers might be highly satisfying until you realize that there still things to be tested or fabricated, and you do not have enough material left of the one you were using! In any case, as I was going to use leftovers, it was very important to make sure before choosing one material over the other that there was going to be enough leftovers of that material in particular as to complete all the laser-cutting exercises that the assignment required. Using some of these leftovers available seemed to me that it was the best idea!

Luckily, I had access to the Fab Lab’s laser cutting machines the first two weeks of August, when there was almost nobody using them except me, which turned out to be very good opportunity to learn how to use them, and find the right settings for them by making all kinds of tests.įurthermore, at that time Fab Lab Barcelona was filled with leftovers of materials that were susceptible of being engraved or cut with a laser-cutter: PMMA) of different thicknesses, cardboard and cork) various types of laminates leather and other textiles. This group project also implied playing around with the different types of joints presented during this week’s lecture.Īs I was not present at Fab Lab Barcelona the week in which this assignment took place, I had to search for these laser-cutting settings on my own.

The aim of this group project was testing the laser-cutters with the materials available, and coming up with the right cutting settings for each machine/material used. Computer-controlled cutting week's assignment included a group project.
